It’s 2020, and the world still has Windows computers available at retail with 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD sizes, although we can at least be thankful that, for the most part, computers with slow, spinning hard disk drives are hard to find.

Hard disks are too slow for anything but storage these days, but it make take a little while yet before it becomes impossible to find a computer with 4GB of RAM and 128GB SSD.

Still, not everyone needs computers with better specs - a standard Windows 10 notebook with those specs can handle everyday web surfing, word processing, social media, video conferencing, messaging, simple games and other everyday PC tasks perfectly well, while being able to run all the usual, everyday PC software.

However, this category has also been challenged for well over a decade by tablet computers, with an A$499 8th-gen iPad the most obvious competitor - and for some, far more compelling due to the incredible array of mature tablet apps that are widely available.

That said, Windows PCs are still going very strong, and for those that need an entry-level or more affordable Windows 10 computer, with a 10th-gen Core processor rather than the cheaper and less powerful Intel variants, the Dynabooks are good value, with a rich history and legacy through the decades of Toshiba’s leadership in mobile computing.

So, what does Dynabook have to say about its two new Satellite Pro models? 

Well, there’s new 14.0” C40-H, which we’re told “expertly combines affordability and mobility”, along with the 15.6” C50-H model, with both offering users “all the tools for a productive work or study day in an easily portable package, without draining the IT budget”.

The pair feature 10th-Gen Intel Core processors, and both have DDR4 RAM memory options “up to 16GB and fast SSD storage options up to 512GB”, although if you want the larger memory and storage capacities, you’ll obviously be paying more than the entry-level sub-$1000 prices.

Designed for life on the move

Dynabook provides more info, stating that the C40-H has been “designed with pure mobility and style in mind”.

Weighing from 1.55kg with an 18.9mm compact form factor, we’re told it is “easily transportable and its battery life of ‘up to’ 10 hours makes it a reliable companion for professionals and students on the move.

“Featuring a narrow bezel design around a non-glare 14.0” LCD HD or FHD screen, the device offers an immersive viewing experience but in a compact footprint.

“While its sister 15.6” device also with HD and FHD options, boasts up to 9.5 hours battery life2 and incorporates a numeric keypad . Both devices are equipped with a large keyboard and ClickPad, with supporting Precision TouchPad for comfortable typing and navigation all day long. Other security options include fingerprint reader and SecurePad via BTO”, but again, those options will cost extra, as is to be expected.

Dynabook states that “Despite being budget-friendly laptops, the new models distinguished dark blue exterior design means the devices don’t compromise on a contemporary look and feel”.

Angela Walker, the Director of Sales and Marketing at Dynabook ANZ said: “We know that IT budgets are limited, especially with the current global crisis, but the pressure’s still on for workers and students to stay productive.

“That’s exactly why we’ve launched the Satellite Pro C40-H and Satellite Pro C50-H - to ensure that everyone can get access to the technology they need to get their work done, at an affordable price point.”

Connect to collaborate

Dynabook explains the C40-H and C50-H are “built with a range of ports and connectivity options so users can work or learn wherever they choose to be. A USB Type-C port provides charge, connect, display and transfer data functions via one port, while two further USB 3.0 ports, a full-size HDMI port and Gigabit-LAN port provide further peripheral connectivity.

“In addition, a micro SD card slot accommodates portable storage needs. For further connectivity, an optional USB-C dock allows a single click connection to minimise cable clutter and quickly connect a user’s favourite peripherals. When it comes to wireless, the C40-H and C50-H are equipped with WiFi 802.11 AX and Bluetooth connectivity.

“The C40-H and C50-H empower users to stay in touch with customers, colleagues and peers. Meeting all of today’s users’ video conferencing needs, the devices are both equipped with an HD Webcam, stereo speakers and in-built Cortana-enabled microphone. They also give users the option to pair their own headphones via Bluetooth or through the mic/headphone combo slot”.

Device-level security

“Defence against increasingly sophisticated cybercriminals is an ongoing challenge for every business and one that should be tackled with secure and manageable devices that incorporate advanced security features. The C40-H and C50-H are equipped with the firmware-based Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 meaning information is encrypted on the device to remove the risk of it being tampered with. In addition, user and admin password capabilities prevent unsolicited access, while an optional Kensington lock slot helps prevent physical theft”.

Pricing and Availability:

Pricing for the Satellite Pro C40-H starts at A$925, with the pricing for the Satellite Pro C50-H starting at A$950, and both will be available this month. At time of publication, details of the C40 range is available here, while the page for the C50 range is yet to be updated, but presumably will be very soon. 

Earlier this month, Dynabook launched a new model from its Portégé range, the Portégé X30W-J 2-in-1 which is claimed to be the world’s lightest. iTWire has a test unit and will be publishing a review later this month.
