Two more COVID-19 deaths, 65 new cases in Meghalaya

Shillong, Dec 16 (UNI) Two more COVID-19 related deaths in Meghalaya took the fatality figure due to the disease up to 133, while 65 fresh cases added up to 687 active cases, even as 66 recoveries surged the number of recovered persons to 12,252 in the State on Wednesday.
Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said that the fresh COVID-19 cases reported on Wednesday included 57 in East Khasi Hills district, six in West Jaintia Hills district and one each in West Garo Hills district and South West Garo Hills district.
Of the 2,71,896 persons tested, 2,58,824 have tested negative for the virus, even as 72,623 persons from outside have entered the State till date.
Meghalaya has so far registered 13072 COVID-19 cases, including 133 deaths, 687 active and 12,252 recoveries, even as 179 persons were in institutional quarantine and 427 in-home isolation, as per latest data issued by the directorate of health services.
Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills District COVID-19 Task Force has said that in view of a few localities in the State capital reporting a large number of cases (more than 20), active surveillance would continue in such areas and if necessary, these areas will be contained to ensure that the transmission chain is stopped.
The District Surveillance Officer informed that the case fatality rate among the elderly is high, at 10 per cent, while 82 per cent of the total deaths are of persons having co- morbidities.
In light of this, the District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills, Isawanda Laloo emphasized the need for close monitoring of the elderly population and persons with co-morbidities.
The District Medical and Health Officer Dr Manoj Basaiawmoit informed that many deaths were seen to occur due to late presentation at the hospital and hence it is important that “symptoms are not ignored, especially amongst the elderly and co-morbid population, and they should report to the nearest health facility without delay”.
Further, the District Surveillance Officer reported that there have been many cases in which positive persons do not reveal their contacts, and also cases in which high-risk contacts refuse to undergo testing, thereby not giving a complete picture to the health authorities of the extent of transmission which can cause untested positive carriers to infect others resulting in a spike in infections.
In this regard, the District Magistrate warned that action will be taken against anyone refusing to comply with the instructions of the health authorities.
With the advent of the festive season and a large number of weddings and other gatherings taking place, Laloo instructed that strict adherence to protocols must be ensured.
She also appealed that there should not be a stigma associated with positive cases or high-risk persons, since this prevents the persons from extending their full cooperation due to fear of being stigmatized.
The Task Force resolved on intensive drives and monitoring to be carried out in all commercial areas to check violators not wearing masks or complying to distancing norms, adding that three random testing sites in commercial areas in the city will also be set up.
Laloo appealed to revelers, wedding parties, shoppers and the general public to cultivate both individual and collective responsibility in the coming days so that there is no fresh surge of cases, which can “cast a shadow over this festive season.”
