Suvendu Adhikari quit his MLA post; Seeks Governor's intervention

Kolkata, Dec 16 (UNI) Ahead of West Bengal's Assembly elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress received a huge jolt when party MLA and strongman of Medinipur Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday quit his Nandigram seat, exactly 20 days after he resigned from the ministry.
Adhikari in a letter to Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar also sought the latter's intervention so that "police and administration are dissuaded from implicating him and associates in criminal cases out of political vendetta".
Mr Dhankhar said, " Suvendu Adhikari former minister @MamataOfficial has by way of representation sought my intervention so that police @WBPolice @KolkataPolice and administration are dissuaded from implicating him and associates in criminal cases out of political vendetta. " " Taking expected steps, " the Governor added.
BJP state president Dilip Ghosh reacting to the latest development in the ruling party said " We will welcome him ( Suvendu Adhikari) if he comes to our party. We are ready to accept him."
" It is a major decision for the sake of mass movement in Bengal," opined BJP's national vice president Mukul Roy.
Rumour is going round that Adhikari is likely to join the saffron brigade when BJP former president and current union home minister Amit Shah visits Bengal this weekend.
Video footage showed that Suvendu Adhikari wearing a mask came straight to the state assembly around 4 pm and submitted a handwritten resignation letter to the secretary and went back.
He did not answer a barrage of questions from the media persons at the assembly complex.
He was asked whether he was to join the BJP or fly to New Delhi but none was answered by the strongman of Medinipur.
Former TMC No 2 Mukul Roy dubbed Suvendu Adhikari a product of Nandigram peasant movement in 2007, which ultimately spelt doom for the Left Front government in 2011.
There were many efforts from the ruling party to keep Adhikari in the fold at the time after he resigned from the Cabinet on November 26 but subsequently a section of party leaders and lately the chief
minister began to slam him without taking his name.
There were hints across south Bengal districts that Suvendu Adhikari was tilting towards saffron brigade.
Adhikari was very much upset with the chief minister over a host of issues including the sudden rise of her nephew Abhishek Banerjee and Prashant Kishor.
Suvendu is from a political family with father and brother both in TMC. He also enjoys the confidence of a number of TMC MLAs, which may make a huge difference at the time of state elections, which is likely to be held in the next six months.
Mukul Roy welcomed Adhikari's decision.
"The day Suvendu Adhikari had resigned from the ministerial post, I had said I will be happy if he leaves TMC and we (BJP) will welcome him. Today, he has resigned from the membership of West Bengal Legislative Assembly and I welcome his decision," BJP Vice-President Mukul Roy said.
Roy also said the TMC was collapsing like a house of cards.
"Everyday someone from the party comes to us to join our party," he said.
Commenting on Adhikari’s resignation, BJP Bengal chief Dilip Ghosh said it
was bound to happen.
He said many MLAs left TMC earlier too and joined the BJP.
"There’s no democracy or respect for people in TMC. Those who want to join in the change in Bengal and contribute to its development are leaving TMC and joining us," Ghosh said.
Adhikari stepped down as Minister of Transport, Irrigation and Waterways on November 27, triggering speculation that he may quit the ruling Trinamool ahead of the next year’s Assembly polls.
Following his resignation, the state’s ruling TMC made many attempts to pacify the rebel leader through several rounds of back-channel talks but failed to convince him.
Adhikari is expected to join BJP on December 19 when Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to visit the poll-bound state for a two-day tour.
The Trinamool has been firefighting to retain Adhikari, who wields considerable influence over the local party leaders in Malda, Murshidabad, Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore, where he was the party in-charge.
After he quit the ministry, the party had rushed senior leader Sougata Roy to reason with him. Roy had even managed to get Adhikari to meet with his bete noire in the party, Trinamool MP and Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee.
Poll strategist Prashant Kishor had been present at the meeting, which Sougata Roy had declared a success.
