GUWAHATI: A Guwahati-based journalist Afnur Ali was stabbed near the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), while trying to save an unidentified woman from an attacker on Monday evening.
Guwahati commissioner of police Munna Prasad Gupta on Tuesday said the attacker, identified as Pankaj Baiswa, is an employee of Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, has been arrested under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the IPC. An investigation is on,” he added.
“Ali was on his way to GMCH to pick up his wife when he saw a woman in distress and ran to help her. While he was trying to save the woman, who is a nurse at GMCH, got attacked by the man,” GMCH superintendent Abhijit Sarma told reporters here.
He was admitted in ICU with multiple injuries in his head. Guwahati Press Club condemned the attack, while people applauded Ali for his efforts to save the woman.
