Mapusa beef traders on Tuesday shut down their shops following no supply of beef since the last few days and have requested Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to take up the issue with Karnataka government over its decision on banning slaughter of cattle which will have a major impact on beef supply in the state.
Beef traders under the banner of All Goa Qureshi Meat Traders’ Association closed down their shops as no beef has been supplied to them from Karnataka following passing of anti-slaughtering bill (Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill, 2020) recently in that state.
The beef traders have expressed concern over the recently-passed bill in Karnataka and its effect in the state which will result in no supply for beef eaters. Currently around 10 tonne of beef is brought from Karnataka on a daily basis. In Mapusa around 3 tonne is the daily requirement.
Raising issues of no supply of beef since Friday, a beef trader from Mapusa Asif Choudhary said, “Since Friday we are not getting beef supply. We get livestock and also beef from Karnataka which is sold here.” He further said that “In this connection we have already submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister and requested him to take up the issue with Karnataka government so that the supply is restored.”
Yassin Bepari said, “We don’t get supply from any other place as Karnataka is the only source and if supply is not restored then traders and their workers who are dependent on this business will suffer losses and will lose their source of livelihood.”
Another trader Dastagir Bepari said, “During Easter also there was no beef available for locals due to lockdown and now in this situation even Christmas may pass without beef if this issue is not resolved hence we request the Chief Minister to take up the issue with the Karnataka
government.”
