KOLKATA: The Bengal government is keen on holding Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections by February-end, a senior state official said on Monday. The government has to inform the Supreme Court on Thursday about its stand on conducting civic polls statewide. It has not yet decided on whether elections to all municipalities and corporations can be held at the same time.
“We have come to know that the state government will take four to six weeks after the adoption of the electoral rolls to conduct the KMC elections, but it has not taken any decision regarding pending polls in other municipalities and corporations,” a senior state election commission official said.
Electoral rolls are likely to be adopted by January 15.
The Election Commission, meanwhile, has begun groundwork for the Bengal assembly polls, likely to be held in May 2021. Deputy election commissioner in charge of Bengal Sudip Jain is slated to come for a three-day visit on Thursday. He is likely to visit north Bengal.
