Notorious criminal on run arrested after 28 yrs

Thane, Dec 14 (UNI) A member of notorious local Ganya gang and an accused in a TADA case who was on the run for 28 years, was arrested by the Crime Branch of the Thane police from Ahmednagar district on Monday.
Accused Sitaram alias Baban Sukhdeo Khose (now aged 66), after committing crimes in the year 1992, had fled from Thane to Parner village in Ahmednagar, where he settled and was.doing the farming, police said.
Acting on a tip off, a team of Crime Unit-I of the city police went to Parner and with the help of the Ahmednagar police, nabbed him from the village today. He was later handed over to the Naupada police, who are carrying out further probe
into the crime.
According to police, Khose was wanted by the Naupada police in a crime under sections 3(3)(3) and 5 of the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act and also sections 120(B), 147, 148, 385, 387, 506(2), 504 and 201 of Indian Penal Code and section 25(1)(a) of the Arms Act.
The FIR was filed on a complaint by one Arun Mudaliar who alleged that between April 10,1992 and October 6,1992, Khose along with other accused, led by notorious gangster Ganesh Gangaram Sawant alias Ganya of B Cabin in Thane city had threatened Mudaliar to hand over the plot in Thane city to Sawant else give them Rs 1.80 lakh or liquidate his family members.
During this period Sawant had spread a reign of terror in the region and people of the city used to call him 'Gabbar Singh' on the lines of infamous character in Bollywood flick 'Sholay'.
In the TADA case, many of the arrested accused were let off and Sawant himself went on to contest the elections to the Thane civic body and was elected as the corporator. He served the full term.
