Night chill further intensifies in Kashmir; Gulmarg freezes at minus 9 degrees

Srinagar, Dec 14 (UNI) The chilly weather conditions have further intensified with mercury dipping several degrees below freezing point due to open skies across Kashmir valley, where world famous ski resort of Gulmarg was the coldest place at minus 9 degrees.

Meanwhile, the night temperature in the Union Territory of Ladakh also witnessed a considerable dip due to open skies. The border town of Leh was the coldest place in the region at minus 13.2 degrees, followed by Kargil at minus 11.8 degrees.

A Met department spokesperson said the weather will remain dry during the next six days, which could result in further dip in the night temperature though the maximum temperature could improve due to sunshine.

After witnessing further dip of about 2 degree from Sunday in the night temperature, tourists woke up to a chilly Monday morning in Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashimr. However, as the day progressed, sunshine greeted the ski resort though weather remained chilly due to ice cold winds. Against minus 7.6 degrees recorded on Sunday, the night temperature in Gulmarg, which is known for its ski slopes and quality of snow, dipped and settled at minus 9 degrees. The minimum temperature in the ski resort was 5 degrees below normal.

The night temperature at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, also dipped about 3 degrees from Sunday and settled at minus 6.7 degrees, which is 3 degrees below normal.

After witnessing above sub-zero night temperature on Sunday, the mercury during the night in the summer capital, Srinagar, dipped and settled at minus 1.4 degrees, which is slightly below normal. People in the city could be seen in warm clothes, including jackets and sweaters, to keep themselves warm. Drivers and mechanics had burned wood on roadsides to keep themselves warm.

Tourist resort, Kokernag, was the only place in the region where the night temperature improved about a degree from Sunday and settled at minus 1.1 degrees.

The night temperature in Qazigund, gateway to the valley, and Kupwara in north Kashmir dipped and settled at 0.3 degrees and minus 1.3 degrees, respectively.
