Abdul Hakkim was part of the four-member assailant team who executed the murder of Suresh Kumar in June 2014. Abu Tahir was also one of the accused.
The murder was allegedly masterminded by Khaja Moideen, a self-declared leader of ISIS, Tamil Nadu module. The two radicals arrested by Puzhal police in connection with the suspected fake gold cheating were part of the gang that killed Suresh Kumar.
Suresh Kumar, president of Tiruvallur east unit of Hindu Munnani, was hacked to death on the night of June 18 when he was shutting down his STD booth. Police had said that he was murdered for his inflammatory speech at a public gathering in Avadi on December 12, 2013.
Police, on Sunday, said they were looking for one Rafeeq, who had been providing the gang with covering jewellery. Rafeeq too has several cases including murder, fake currency and hawala, against him.
The gang had cheated at least six other pawnshop owners in Adyar, Rajamangalam and Red Hills in a similar fashion and collected lakhs of rupees which is believed to have routed for fundamental activities, sources said. In some instances, they were also indulging in holding kangaroo courts to settle disputes, collecting huge sum, sources said.
Explaining the modus operandi, the police said the gang would come up with ornaments which have 40 per cent good content so that it would be difficult to be detected by pawnshop owners.
However, based on a complaint from Sanjay, a pawnbroker from Puzhal, where the suspect went with a ‘five-sovereign chain’ seeking Rs 1.5 lakh, police arrested the four suspects on Saturday.
