Government of Assam gave special thrust to Agriculture sector: Sonowal

Kolkata, Dec 14 (UNI) “Government of Assam gave special thrust to the Agriculture sector by
announcing a slew of incentives for setting up of rice clusters, mills and cold storages,” said
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at the Annual Session & AGM of the Indian
Chamber of Commerce (ICC) here on Monday.
Mr Sonowal further informed that Aatma Nirbhar Bharat will be fulfilled only when Assam
becomes self-sufficient. Through the implementation of Act East Policy, the local youths of
the state will get huge opportunity to strengthen Assam’s economy by increasing trade and
business activities in the region.
He also said that with financial outlay of Rs. 20 lakh crore during the lockdown period
helped the MSME sector in Assam. With the help of this package Government of Assam
has arranged for collateral free loans to 68,000 MSMEs in the state.
Talking about agriculture sector, the CM highlighted that agricultural holds the key in
providing employment opportunities to the state's youth. In order to engage the young
generation to take up farming as a means of self-employment the state Government has
joined hands with international agencies to bring in new technologies and innovation to
the farming community.
Talking about export potential of Assam, Mr Sonowal informed that during the nationwide
lockdown Assam farmers managed to export their produce worth Rs. 357 crore to various
parts of the country and outside.
Finally, with regard to international connectivity, he informed that the Government of
Assam is working effectively to promote connectivity under the BBIN- MVA agreement
to increase economic activities between Assam and its neighbouring countries.
He firmly believes that unless there is seamless connectivity, any joint venture would
not be successful.
Mayank Jalan President, Indian Chamber of Commerce in his welcome remarks
mentioned that under the leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal the Government of Assam
has taken effective measures to make the state economically and socially vibrant and
free from insurgency and corruption.
Vikash Agarwal, Senior Vice President, Indian Chamber of Commerce delivered the
formal vote of thanks and thanked Sarbananda Sonowal for his valuable insights.
The interactive web session with Chief Minister of Assam was moderated by Keshav
Bhajanka, Chairman, ICC Young Leaders Forum.
