SES to build new satellite ground station with Pivotel for services in ANZ, Pacific Islands

Monday 14 December 2020 | 13:19 CET | News

SES has signed a cooperation agreement with Pivotel, an Australian provider of mobile satellite services, to build a new satellite ground station in New South Wales. The station, at the Pivotel teleport in Dubbo, will support O3b mPower, SES’s next-generation non-geostationary (NGSO) constellation, and enable the delivery of improved telecom services to regional communities across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

The terabit-level constellation will deliver multiple gigabits-per-second beams of data services to customers, providing fibre-like connectivity with more bandwidth and improved flexibility to remote and underserved regions. The Dubbo gateway will start operating in the second half of next year, and track SES’s O3b mPower constellation operating at Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) 8,000 km up from Earth.

Pivotel has been hosting an O3b gateway since 2013, when SES’s current MEO constellation was launched. With the gateway, SES has helped provide connectivity services to communities and regional government in Papua New Guinea, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia, among others. The technology has enabled some of the countries to roll out low latency 4G/4G+ networks via satellite.
