India’s day-to-day power demand 5-10 GW higher in Dec than last year: R K Singh

India’s daily power demand in December this year is 5-10 gigawatt (GW) higher than the corresponding day previous year, power and renewable energy minister R K Singh said on Monday. He added that this increase in power demand is a sign of a growing economy.
“In December, day-to-day power demand is 5-10 GW higher than the same day previous year, so we are back on the growth path… We will grow faster because consumers are adding more appliances and the economy is growing,” he said at the annual general meeting of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
In October, the country’s power demand had gone up by 12 per cent. According to the power ministry data, power consumption grew by 13.65 per cent during 1-7 October to 25.95 billion units (BU), up from 22.83 BU in the same period last year.
This doubt-digit rise was attributed to an increased commercial and industrial with easing of the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions imposed by the government on 25 March to limit the spread of the pandemic after which power consumption declined from March to August as economic activities reduced.
According to an ETEnergyworld report, in October, power generation from renewable sources stood at 10,025 million units (MU), a 31 per cent jump compared to 7,634 MU in the same month last year.
