Memo to Union Education Minister regarding Manipur University
Date : November 23, 2020
NEFIS SUBMITS MEMO TO UNION EDUCATION MINISTER REGARDING PROBLEMS PLAGUING MANIPUR UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY!
DEMANDS IMMEDIATE APPOINTMENT OF REGULAR V-C AND SCRAPPING OF UNJUSTIFIED FEE BEING LEVIED FROM STUDENTS!
NEFIS TO INTENSIFY MOVEMENT IF DEMANDS ARE NOT MET!
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) today submitted a memorandum to Union Education Minister, Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ regarding the problems which have been plaguing the Manipur University community since quite some time, and which need to be taken into consideration and resolved urgently.
It should be noted that Manipur University is functioning without a regular Vice Chancellor since last many months. The lack of a regular V-C has led to ad-hoc functioning of the university administration and is the cause of great anxiety for the university community.
Moreover, there is the issue of unjustified fee being levied from the students. It should be noted that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, no physical classes have been conducted during the past year. Even the exams have not been conducted in the physical mode and assessment has been done only through online assignments.
As such, levying of examination fee for the second semester for which assessment has been done only through assignments, is unjustified. Also, due to widespread suffering and loss of jobs during the pandemic, a large section of students coming from marginalised backgrounds is unable to pay fees, and is being unduly put under duress with unjustified fee.
NEFIS in the memorandum submitted to the Education Minister demanded appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor from among the university academics, and putting an end to the ad-hoc manner in which the university is functioning.
NEFIS also demanded that unjustified levying of fee from the students should be stopped, and fee should be refunded to those who have already paid it. NEFIS would be intensifying its movement if its demands are not met immediately.

MEMORANDUM
To
Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’
Union Minister of Education
Government of India
Subject: Regarding various problems being faced by Manipur University community.
Sir,
This is to bring to your notice the problems which have been plaguing the Manipur University community since quite some time, and which need to be taken into consideration and resolved urgently. The problems which are persistent since last few months are as follows:
1. Manipur University is functioning without a regular Vice Chancellor. The lack of a regular V-C has led to ad-hoc functioning of the university administration and is the cause of great anxiety for the university community.
2. Unjustified fee is being levied from the students. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, no physical classes have been conducted during the past year.
Regarding, these issues we make the following demands:
1. A regular Vice Chancellor from among the university academics should be immediately appointed, and the ad-hoc manner in which the university is functioning should be immediately put an end to.
2. Unjustified levying of fee from the students should be stopped, and fee should be refunded to those who have already paid it.
We sincerely hope you would earnestly look into these issues, and direct the concerned authorities regarding resolution of these issues urgently.
