TIRUNELVELI: A woman, whose husband was murdered recently, committed suicide on Sunday in a home for women in distress in Tirunelveli.
Megala (20), the deceased, 20, was found hanging in the dormitory of the One Stop Centre for women in distress at Palayamkottai in the city.
She was admitted to the centre by the police following the murder of her husband S Kaliraj, 25, on Thursday night. He was allegedly murdered by Megala's father and brothers.
Preliminary inquiry by the police revealed that Kaliraj’s father Sankaran is the elder brother of Megala’s father Isakimuthu. Both families resided on Sundara Vinayagar temple street in Old Pettai in the city.
Megala and Kaliraj fell in love but their marriage was opposed by their families as they shared a brother-sister relationship.
However, the two went against the wish of their families and got married in October last year.
The couple relocated to another place and shifted back to the city about six months ago.
Staying at Shanthi Nagar in the city, Kaliraj worked at the office of a cable television operator. On Thursday night, Kaliraj was sitting on his bike at Shanthi Nagar, when he was hacked to death by a gang.
CCTV footage revealed that the murder was executed by Isakimuthu and his sons Suriyaraj and Thangaraj.
“We recovered the clothes and the vehicle used by the accused for the murder. Two special teams are on the lookout for the accused who are on the run,” Tirunelveli city deputy commissioner of police (law and order) R Saravanan said.
Since there was a threat to the life of Megala and she was not accepted by Kaliraj’s family, the police took her to the One Stop Centre for temporary custody.
Megala’s body was sent to Tirunelveli government medical college hospital for an autopsy.
The city police registered a case of suicide and initiated an investigating.
