Under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority, a National Lok Adalat was organised at the Sessions Division here today.
Thirteen benches were constituted under the supervision of NS Gill, District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA).
As many as 1,431 cases were taken up and 1,177 cases were amicably disposed of. Compensation worth Rs10.32 crore was awarded to specially-abled persons and minors.
Ashish Kumar Bansal, Secretary, DLSA, said compensation was also granted to the victims in sexual offences cases as per the Punjab Victim Compensation Scheme 2017 and the NALSA’s Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault/other Crimes 2018.
Gill handed over requisite letters worth Rs5.43 lakh as compensation to the victims in sexual offences cases. Of the total amount, Rs2 lakh was granted as compensation to a victim who was a minor, deaf, dumb and differently-abled girl. The trials of her case stood abated due to the death of the accused.
Gill said despite the threat of Covid-19, litigants as well as lawyers actively participated in the Lok Adalat. He said that Covid-19 protocols were followed and face masks were distributed by the district police.
