Amritsar, December 12
A police team from Kanpur today visited the city to record the statements of victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots that had erupted in Kanpur following the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The Uttar Pradesh Government had constituted a four-member special investigation team (SIT) to probe into the circumstances that the led to the riots in Kanpur. According to information, five witnesses recorded their statements before the SIT.
Around 125 people had lost their lives and over 1,200 FIRs were registered in Kanpur following the assassination of Indira Gandhi. The SIT members who recorded the statements included SIs Suraj Partap Singh, Punit Kumar and Sunil Kanojia. — TNS
