Aformer caretaker of an elderly couple living in Kothrud has been arrested along with three others for being involved in a robbery at their house, where the accused decamped with items and money together worth Rs 11.52 lakh.
The robbery occurred in the early hours of Thursday inJayabhavani Nagar area of Kothrud. Kothrud police arrested the accused as they were preparing to flee to Goa.
Upon investigation, the police discovered that one of the accused is the owner of the agency which provided the caretaker to the affected couple. They have been involved insimilar incidents in the past and have police cases against them.
According to the police, the four accused have been identified as 25-year-old Sandeep Hande, 48-year-old Chhagan Jadhav, 21-year-old Deepak Sugave and 22-year-old Akash Kamble. From them, police recovered 38 tolas of gold, USD 3,000 and Rs 80,000 in cash. Jadhav runs an agency calledAjinkya Nursing which provides caretakers to old couples living alone in the city. Through this, he was also targeting rich elderly couples and complaints have been made against him in the past, additional commissioner of police Sanjay Shinde said in a press conference.
The targeted couple, a 74-year-old man and his wife, live alone in the city. They have a son who lives in the US and a daughter who is a doctor; she lives in Bavdhan. The senior citizen has to undergo dialysis treatment, and so needed a caretaker. In the early hours of Thursday, the accused broke a window and entered the house on the terrace. The complainant's wife was stabbed in the neck and threatened against raising an alarm. Hande had worked for the complainant for a month before leaving a year ago so he knew the layout of the house. The accused demanded the locker keys and they robbed the cash and jewellery. The incident was captured on CCTV cameras.
After the police were informed, they went to the site and started investigating. While all the accused had covered their faces, they were able to zero in on Kamble due to a distinctive tattoo. The cops managed to arrest Kamble on technical grounds. Through him, that understood that Jadhav was the main mastermind. As he was preparing to flee to Goa, the police immediately arrested him.
Police said that Hande had deleted his mobile number from the complainant's mobile while leaving the house after committing the robbery. Also, it has come to light that Hande stole the complainant's bike a few months back. This gave him confidence to rob them again.
All the accused in the case are working for the agency started by Jadhav. Jadhav was sending the accused to work in homes of vulnerable citizens. After extracting all the information about a place, they would hatch a plan to commit a robbery. The gang has so far committed five crimes. Some of the crimes are inPimpri-Chinchwad area, said senior inspector Sunil Tambe from Kothrud police station.
"Under sections 394 (robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), a case has now been registered," he said.
