Remand prisoner escapes from Coimbatore hospital

COIMBATORE: A remand prisoner escaped from police when he was brought to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Saturday.
S Prabhu, 20, from Madurai district, used to stay on roadside platforms at Rathinapuri in Coimbatore city. He was involved in robbery and pickpocketing.
The Rathinapuri (crime) police arrested Prabhu on December 2 for pickpocketing, and he was remanded in judicial custody. Prabhu was lodged in the Avinashi sub-jail.
On Friday, he told sub-jail authorities that he was unwell. The prison authorities approached Rathinapuri (crime) police to take him to the CMCH for treatment.
On Saturday, a police team led by sub-inspector Revathi took him to the CMCH for treatment. While hospital staff were collecting details about Prabhu from the police, he pushed down the sub-inspector Revathi the three police personnel and started to run from the hospital premises. He ran towards Lanka Corner and the police team tried to chase him. The general public also joined the effort to nab him.
However, Prabhu managed to escape.
SI Revathi, who suffered minor injuries on her hand, was taking treatment in the CMCH. Based on her complaint, the Race Course (law&order) police registered an FIR against Prabhu under Section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the Indian Penal Code. A special team has been formed to nab him.
