Arrangements are being made to deter the farmers and to ease progress for motorists in places likely to be adversely affected by the protests.
Nearly 2,000 policemen will be deployed on Gurgaon’s borders with Delhi and at multiple points of NH8, the highway that links Delhi and Jaipur, both to maintain law and order and to ensure smooth flow of traffic. Three battalions of the Rapid Action Force will also be kept on standby in Gurgaon, while each border point will have two teargas teams, anti-riot vehicles, fire tenders, cranes and ambulances. “The arrangement we have made should help us deal with any kind of situation,” said Gurgaon police commissioner K Rao.
Azad Khan, coordinator, Bharatiya Kisan Union (south Haryana), said over 1,000 farmers from Rajasthan are heading to Delhi on tractors and trucks, while hundreds from Nuh will join them at Shahjahanpur border. “We will march towards Delhi. If stopped by the authorities and police, we will sit-in protest at the Haryana-Rajasthan border,” he said.
In Delhi, the traffic police held a meeting on Friday to review the special arrangements for the weekend, especially at the borders where the farmers have been protesting for 16 days now. In a series of tweets, the cops said Tikri and Dhansa borders were closed for traffic movement, while Jhatikara border was open only for two-wheelers and pedestrians. Traffic was also being diverted from Mukarba Chowk and GT Karnal road. Those wishing to go to Haryana could pass through Jharoda (only single carriageway), Daurala, Kapashera, Badusarai, Rajokri NH 8, Bijwasan/Bajghera, Palam Vihar and Dundahera borders.
In another tweet, the police said, “Singhu, Auchandi, Piau Maniyari, and Mangesh borders are closed. NH44 is also closed. Please take alternate routes via Lampur, Safiabad, Saboli, and Singhu School toll tax borders. Please avoid Outer Ring Road, GTK road, NH-44.”
On Friday, apart from the borders, the morning congestion was notable at ITO, Dhaula Kuan, Palam flyover, IIT-Delhi crossing, Rajouri Garden, and near Sarai Kale Khan.
