Market skyrockets to historic highs; Sensex tops 250 pts, Nifty tops 13,560; ONGC leads the pack

After a day's halt in their rally, the domestic indices have returned on track and are touching record highs, yet again.

After a day's halt in their rally, the domestic indices have returned on track and are touching record highs, yet again. At around 11.16am, NSE's index Nifty 50 climbed higher by 0.55% or 73.90 pts to 13,552.20. The NSE index crossed the 13,560 mark earlier in the morning today.

Sensex was trading at 46,209.36 after topping over 250pts. S&P BSE Sensex had hit an all time high of 46,309.63 earlier in the day.

ONGC surged the most on the back of higher crude prices by over 9.5% with its shares trading at Rs100.50. GAIL rose by 6.58%, NTPC gained 4.12% and Coal India surged 3.30%, following ONGC to the list of top gainers.

Making a comeback was UPL, yesterday's top loser now today one of the top gainers. UPL Ltd's stock plummeted by a whopping 14% during yesterday's trade after a whistleblower alleged that the company's promoter's siphoned off money. The company, however, issued a clarification soon after refuting the said whistleblower's complaints. On Friday, UPL's stock were trading in the green higher by 2.85%.

The Wall Street indices had closed lower on Wednesday after huge sell-offs by US tech giants, which had dragged the Indian markets lower. On Thursday, however, while Dow Jones ended lower, Nasdaq recovered from the previous day's sharp fall and closed higher anticipating stimulus package.

US experts gave their nod to Pfizer to be used in emergencies which further fuelled investor sentiment. The markets have been riding the highs of signs of a faster economic recovery from the lows coronavirus and the resultant lockdowns that had dragged them down. The continuous progress in Covid-19 vaccine development has played a huge role in the indices shooting through the charts.
