WebSprix to deploy Cisco Routed Optical Networking in Ethiopia

Friday 11 December 2020 | 11:17 CET | News

Cisco has announced that WebSprix, an IT products and services provider in Ethiopia, has selected Cisco's Routed Optical Networking for launch in the first half of 2021. The product is part of Cisco's overall Converged SDN Transport Architecture and will reduce in network cost and simplify network management. It will converge the IP and optical layers into a simpler, more operationally efficient network for streamlined planning, design, activation, troubleshooting and management.

Reducing the number of devices on the network enhances resiliency, increases availability and optimises fibre capacity. WebSprix will be the first ISP in Ethiopia to offer high-speed broadband internet access, IPTV and voice services together. The Cisco Routed Optical Networking system with the 8000 series routers will enable WebSprix to offer these services at a low cost.

Websprix will use the Cisco 8200 series routers with 400 GbE ZR/ZR+ coherent optics to create a high-speed network backbone that traditionally would have required building and managing a separate optical network. The ZR/ZR+ optics will allow long distance fibre connections to terminate directly on the router, without the need for a separate optical layer or any sacrifice in router port density.
