The violence occurred at some places in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts after the end of voting for the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) in Assam on Thursday. Officials said that the police fired 25-30 shots into the air to disperse the mob who broke into a vehicle carrying a ballot from the Malabhog polling station in the Kachhgaon area under Gosaigaon police station in Kokrajhar.
In the vehicle carrying election material and election officials, there was some disturbance in Habrubali on National Highway No. 31C, meanwhile people gathered there and threw stones. A police team arrived on the spot and polling boxes and election officials were sent from another vehicle.
Some anti-social elements tried to attack the strong room of the sub-divisional officer's office, but the police foiled his plans and arrested some people. An Assam State Election Commission official said that the voting could be held again at the polling station concerned.
The supporters of Bodoland People's Front and United People's Party Liberals also clashed with each other in Bokhungri after the voting ended. One person was seriously injured in the incident. Polling station number 57 officer was attacked in Phulaguri, Chirang. His vehicle was damaged in the incident.
