Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday laid foundation stone for the construction of a government veterinary college and research institute, in Theni district, through video conferencing.

The veterinary college will be constructed in 253.64 acres in Veerapandi village in Theni district, at a cost of Rs 265.87 crore. The veterinary college would cater to the needs of farmers from neighbouring districts of Madurai, Virudhunagar and Dindigul districts and as the college is bordering Kerala, it will help is storing meat, milk and production materials related to veterinary sciences.
The college will house all usual facilities including state-of-art labs, classrooms, hostels, quarters for teaching staff and guest house. The college will have 15 departments and for 2020-21 academic year, 40 students have been admitted.
The Chief Minister also inaugurated the scheme of distributing free bicycles for students of Class 11 for the current academic year. Nearly, 5,45,166 students would be benefitted under the scheme and the total cost of the bicycles is Rs 214.79 crore.
In the evening, the Chief Minister wrote a DO letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulating him for laying foundation stone for construction of a new Parliamentary building. “I (Chief Minister) am confident that this (new Parliament building) will be a land mark structure in Independent India,” said the Chief Minister, in the letter. Palaniswami also said that on behalf of people of the state, he congratulates Modi for his personal touch in shaping the project.
