CHENNAI: Two policemen who had accosted two men on Kanathur beach on ECR, attacked and took away Rs 2,000 from them are in the dock as the State Human Rights Commission has ordered the government to pay Rs 50,000 compensation to the youngsters.
Acting chairperson of the commission D Jayachandran has recommended that the state recover the amount from the personal funds of K Thanigaimalai, then head constable attached to the Adyar police station, and A Balasubramaniam, a constable attached to the armed reserve wing.
This apart, the government has also been directed to take suitable departmental action against the two cops within a month.
The commission passed the order after taking suo motu cognizance of a news report highlighting the incident dated May 22, 2019.
One of the victims, Karthick, was a private firm employee who visited Kanathur beach to meet his friend Yashwanth who had come from Coimbatore.
While they were talking, the two policemen intercepted and demanded Rs 5,000 from them. They were further warned that they would land in trouble if both of them were taken to the police station. Therefore, the victims paid Rs 2,000 they had and left the beach.
During the course of hearing, the assistant commissioner of police Neelankarai range filed a report submitting that the two policemen had indeed taken Rs 2,000 from the victims.
The report further added that the policemen were immediately placed under suspension and departmental action was initiated.
