Vodafone Spain said Castello on the country’s east coast has become one of the first European cities to use narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) technology to monitor, control and manage its water consumption thanks to a project launched by the operator and local water cycle management company FACSA, part of Grupo Gimeno. The technology makes it possible to connect sensors in underground areas and in building interiors with little or no mobile coverage, said the partners, adding that the also used Grupo Gimeno’s IoTsens smart water platform and Contazara’s communication equipment for the rollout.
The system is designed to provide hourly information on the consumption of water by residents, businesses and industries alike, reducing water losses due to the early detection of leaks, said the partners.
Vodafone launched its NB-IoT network in Madrid and Valencia back in 2017 and had 2.75 million IoT connections all over the country at the end of March, up 23 percent year on year.
