COIMBATORE: Project SPB Vanam was officially started at a reserve site in Pachapalayam, Coimbatore, on Thursday.
The initiative was launched on October 16 on Siruthuli campus in memory of singer SP Balasubrahmanyam. Land for the same was allotted by the Perur Chettipalayam panchayat recently.
A walking track in shape of a musical note was also created for walkers and joggers.
The initiative was launched by actor and founder of Green Kalam -- Vivekh, who along with trustee Vanitha Mohan, planted the first tree sapling.
The 1.8-acre reserve site will house 74 trees to commemorate 74 years of the singer’s life.
The Officers Colony Association of Pachapalayam volunteered to maintain SPB Vanam and make it a unique model of community participation.
The 74 trees would feature species that are used for musical instruments and species that boast of fragrant flowers. There would be sthala vrikshams of temples that SPB had visited and sung. An Ayilyam tree would also be planted symbolic of his birth star.
A statement from Siruthuli said the site would be further developed into a public space consisting of play areas for children, a library and several other amenities.
