Backing the protesting Indian farmers, three US lawmakers — John Garamendi, Jim Costa, Sheila Jackson Lee — have expressed concern over the agrarian crisis erupted due to newly enacted farm laws.

In a joint letter addressed to Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Embassy of India to the United States, the US Congressmen wrote that they were distressed to see the actions of the Indian government that had restricted the rights for many Indians; not only for farmers, but also for religious minorities and the human rights organisations.

Dr Pritpal Singh and Jaswant Singh Hothi from the American Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee showed gratitude towards the US lawmakers for raking up the ongoing farmers’ agitation and told the Indian Ambassador that the country should demonstrate a model of democratic values while dealing with the farmers, who were peacefully demonstrating for their rights.

“The US Congressmen, who are also the members of the American Sikh Congressional Caucus, told Ambassador Sandhu that many of these farmers have children, relatives and friends, who are US citizens and have reached out to them to share their concerns about these developments. They demanded from the Indian government to refrain from suppressing the farmers’ rights,” said Dr Pritpal Singh. Harpreet Singh Sandhu, a member of the American Sikh Congressional Caucus Committee, said, “We are indebted to the US Congressmen for becoming the voice of the farmers from Punjab who are demonstrating peacefully and trying to save their land and lives from the clutches of corporate houses, who would become more powerful after the newfarm laws.” Meanwhile, the Sikh Coordination Committee East Coast also thanked the Congressmen. — TNS
