Palaniswami patted for handling COVID-19 pandemic, just 4 deaths in 107 Lankan refugees camps in TN

Chennai, Dec 10 (UNI) Just four COVID-19 deaths were reported
in the 107 Sri Lankan refugee camps in Tamil Nadu--all above 50
years of age and had co-morbid health conditions--with Chief
Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami coming in for praise for effective
handling of the pandemic.
At a webinar organised by the Ethiraj College for Women and Yuva
Leadership Insitute to mark the World Human Rights Day, experts
lauded the efforts of the Chief Minister in protecting the inmates of
the refugee camps from the pandemic.
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR)
reported that the peak of the Covid-10 crisis, 168 countries
closed their borders either partially or fully, with 90 of them
not making an exception for those seeking asylum.
The theme of this year’s World Human Rights Day is ‘Recover
Better - Stand Up for Human Rights.’
Speaking on ‘Identities and Inter-sectionality with standpoints
and challenges of refugees,’ OfERR (Organisation for Eelam
Refugees' Rehabilitation) Educational Officer R Pathmanathan
said Tamil Nadu recorded over 8,00,000 cases of COVID-19.
''Yet, in the 107 refugee camps in Tamil Nadu, only 487 cases of
COVID-19 were detected of which four of them passed away due
to Covid-19. All the four who died were above 50 years of age
and had other health ailments'', he said.
He said no child died in the refugee camps owing to COVID-19.
The Tamil Nadu Government undertook a lot of efforts to protect
the refugees from COVID-19. Due to these efforts, the refugees
were protected to a great extent, he added.
Mr Pathmanathan said the refugees in open-air camps joined hands
with the administration and erected temporary fences to prevent
insiders from going out and others from coming in.
They also undertook protective measures and awareness initiatives.
''A great measure of thanks is owed to the Government workers,
social workers, and volunteers from NGO'', he said.
In his address on ‘Status Refugees in South Asia during the pandemic,’
Dr Gladston Xavier, Associate Professor, Department of Social Work,
Loyola College said in the global refugee scenario, South Asia hosts
the most number of refugees in the world.
''Afghanistan is a refugee-producing country and most of them from
Afghanistan are living in Pakistan Border areas'', he said.
At one point, there were 1,50,000 refugees lived in India from Sri Lanka
and in Tamil Nadu.
''We have 107 camps housing close to 58,000 refugees. On the other
hand, we have refugees from different parts of the world who live in
India. People from Armenia and other countries such as Somalia,
Ethiopia and a whole host of African countries came to India as
refugees'', he said.
Refugee Rights are rights, which fall directly under the ambit of
Human Rights, which are inalienable, indivisible and innate.
These three features for refugees do not exist. Refugees in South
Asia are a very unique population.
''We are talking about 79 million people who are displaced all over
the world. The largest refugee-producing countries are now Syria,
Afghanistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, China and African countries”,
he said.
