Mexico's Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) has granted The Walt Disney Company and 21st Century Fox the latest of several extensions to divest its Fox Sports channels in the country, this time until 04 March 2021. The sale is one of the conditions imposed for Disney's USD 73 billion purchase of 21st Century Fox, a transaction that was unanimously approved by the watchdog as long as it agreed to sell Fox’s 22 regional sports networks in view of its ownership of cable sports network ESPN.
Separately, El Universal reported that Spanish broadcaster and sports rights broker Mediapro has emerged as a possible buyer of Fox Sports in Mexico, alongside AT&T, DAZN, NBC, Comcast and Fox Corporation. Mediapro would use the purchase of Fox’s regional channels as a means of finally entering the Mexican and South American football market but any deal would depend on the IFT’s approval, said the report.
