Cut in water supply irks paddy growers

Reacting over a drastic cut in canal water supply in the past three days, Kisan Sangharsh Samiti (KSS) has warned the Centre that such steps won’t help in cowing down farmers bodies in continuing their stir against the “black” laws.

KSS spokesman Subhash Sehgal said in a tripartite meeting held in April, the BBMB had agreed to release 15,540 cusecs of water via the Harike barrage for the canals in Punjab and Rajasthan in December, but the receipt on Monday was reportedly reduced to 11,000 cusecs and 12,000 cusecs on Tuesday. This was affecting wheat sowing in Abohar, Fazilka, Ferozepur in Punjab and Sriganganagar and Hanumangarh in Rajasthan.

Sehgal said thousands of cusecs of canal water had allegedly been diverted during summer season to West Punjab province of Pakistan from Ferozepur headworks due to poor water management and our protest on this issue with the Jal Shakti Ministry was of no avail. To cover that loss and to harass the farmers for overwhelmingly joining the stir at Delhi borders, the Centre was now maneuvering to reduce water supply, he alleged.
