Telefonica said the number of voice calls on its Spanish mobile network climbed by 20 percent in the year to October, attributed above all to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. It describes the growth as remarkable given that mobile voice traffic rose by just 10 percent between 2015 and 2019. Voice calls dipped as expected during the summer months following a 35 percent surge in March when the Spanish government placed the country’s 47 million residents on lockdown.
The operator noted a rise in both the work and personal environment, with teleworking accounting for an increase in calls around midday followed by another surge around 7pm due to family use. Voice traffic on the mobile network has grown more on weekends due to increased free time during lockdown coupled with a reduction in the number of personal encounters, said Telefonica.
