Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) on Wednesday demolished six structures, including five commercial establishments in wake of the drive to demolish illegal constructions of notorious criminals.

The demolition drive started from the Cloth Market area early morning as the IMC team brought down a three-story house in the area. The structure belonged to Yakub Noor, a notorious criminal. As many as 100 IMC workers and officials were roped in for the demolition drive.

The presence of a religious structure near the house posed a difficulty for the civic body team. It had to be cautious during the demolition to avoid any damage to the structure. A heavy police force was also deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident. Yakub’s wife, who was not ready to vacate the structure, kept shouting against IMC squad.

She continued her protest for about an hour and the situation was brought under control only after police intervention. “Twenty cases related to murder, extortion and other serious offences are registered against Yakub at different police stations,” said a police official.

IMC officials said that a notice was already issued to the occupants. The G+2 structure was constructed illegally on a 10x35 sqft area located next to Mama Bhanje Ki Dargah.

Later, five commercial outlets located near Lal Hukumchand Hospital in the Malharganj area were demolished. Officials said that the shops belonged to Narendra Jat, a notorious criminal involved in gambling. All the shops were removed within an hour and the drive concluded at 11:30am.

IMC additional commissioner Devendra Singh said that so far, over 60 illegal constructions of criminals and mafias have been demolished. “A list of illegal constructions of goons was shared by the police department and on its basis demolition action is being taken,” he said.
