Udhagamandalam: The Nilgiris MP A Raja has shot off a letter to the general manager of Southern Railway to resume regular services on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) to boost the hill district’s tourism appeal.
Stating that the NMR was declared a Unesco World Heritage in 2005, he said there has been an increase in the tourism activities in the hill station since then.
“The NMR is one of the most photographed railways in the country, besides being featured in movies and advertisements. Thereby, the NMR contributes towards the economy of the hill district,” the letter read.
Pointing out that the services on the NMR was suspended following the Covid-19 outbreak, he said the Southern Railway had operated chartered trains from Mettupalayam to Ooty on Saturday and Sunday (Dec 5& 6) after the state government allowed resumption of services.
