Gurgaon: MCG is going to make ward number 32 a model for solid waste management. The civic body is going to set up a composting plant in front of Park Hospital and the wet waste of the entire ward will go to that plant.
“The work on the plant will begin next week. We will ensure that minimum waste from ward number 32 goes to Bandhwari and the waste collected from the ward is segregated and composted in the new plant that we set up there,” said Hariom Attri, joint commissioner 3, MCG.
The civic body has roped in a non-government organisation, Saahas, to transform the ward. “We are doing a ward level intervention by streamlining the waste management system. We will work with the existing waste collection staff for segregation. People are aware of waste segregation but waste segregation does not happen on the ground. So, we are going to streamline that process. We are working on what ward waste management should look like,” said Sonia Garga of NGO Saahas. MCG has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the NGO.
Officials said the plan is to create a model ward so that other wards can be transformed on the same lines. “If you have a template of a model ward ready, you can replicate it across the city,” added Garga.
MCG officials said there are many societies in the city that are segregating their waste into dry, wet and hazardous/biomedical waste on their own and have set an example for others to follow.
