Assam organisation awarded for employment training to disabled

Guwahati, Dec 9 (UNI) An organisation working to provide employment to disabled people in Assam, Atma Nirbhar – Ek Challenge, is among the winners of NCPEDP Mindtree Helen Keller Awards, 2020.
The awards are given by National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) to celebrate and recognize individuals and organisations working towards promoting employment of persons with disabilities.
In total, 11 awardees have been announced under 3 categories and the awards will be given away tomorrow on the occasion of Human Rights Day, in a virtual ceremony.
Atma Nirbhar – Ek Challenge has been selected in the category for ‘role model companies/NGOs/institutions’.
It works to make persons with disabilities economically independent by providing employment and livelihood opportunities.
For this, they operate a small tea and grocery packaging unit where only persons with disabilities are employed.
At present, they have among the beneficiaries, people with various disabilities ranging from speech and hearing impaired to cerebral palsy, from orthopedic disability to mental illness with preference given to women for employment.
Additionally, they teach self-employable skills to the beneficiaries so that they are capable of earning additional income in their spare time.
For this, Atma Nirbhar impart training in paper bag making, tailoring and horticulture. Of the 50 persons employed, 47 are persons with disabilities.
