Chris Pickard (Cambridge): “The theoretical, computational and experimental hunt for room temperature superconductivity”

Brooklyn College Physics Department Virtual Colloquium

Speaker: Chris Pickard, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge, UK

Title: The theoretical, computational and experimental hunt for room temperature superconductivity

Abstract: The search for room temperature superconductivity has driven generations of scientists, and tantalised the general public. Recently, it was revealed that a mixture of carbon, hydrogen and sulfur loses all resistance at 15 ˚C, but, alas, at pressures similar to those at the centre of the Earth. I will explain the experimental and computational developments that have brought us to this point, and discuss the prospects for superconductivity at room conditions.
