THANE: The two monkeys, whose bodies were buried by unknown people in Thane on Monday, were killed and not electrocuted, confirmed the post mortem reports of the forest department.
The Thane Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) had received a distress call on Monday that two monkeys had suffered electric shocks. But when they reached the spot they were told that the monkeys were electrocuted and buried by some people.
The forest department along with Thane RDMC removed the bodies and sent them for post-mortem to the veterinary department in Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
"The autopsy reports showed that the monkeys were assaulted with an object on their hands, head and back, they had suffered internal wounds," said Narendra Muthe, range forest officer (Thane).
The forest officials will now be investigating the same and registering a complaint.
"The animals were killed by hitting with a hard object and an attempt to dispose of them was made which is a violation of both Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Wildlife Protection Act. Both primates, Hanuman Langur's are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 in Schedule 2. A case will be registered against unknown people followed by a detailed investigation to find the culprits by the forest department,” said Pawan Sharma, honorary wildlife warden (Thane).
