YouTube has launched support for live HDR (high-dynamic range) streams, making it the first major video platform to do so. The company has supported HDR since 2016 and will now be giving creators with compatible encoders the possibility of live streaming videos in a video format that offers far higher contrast, image quality and a wider range of colours. It has also offered 4K live streaming since 2016, meaning creators can now broadcast live in UHD with HDR.
In a blog post, YouTube said viewers can already watch HDR live streams on supported devices, which include the latest Android mobile devices, HDR-capable smart TVs, streaming sticks, Chromecast Ultra devices plus Windows and Mac PCs with HDR graphics support. The company added that it intends to continue improving the technology by expanding options for creators to stream HDR from additional encoders and mobile devices in the future.
