Starbucks Corp. SBUX, +0.23% announced Wednesday that it has named Mellody Hobson the next non-executive chair of its board of directors, effective March 2021.

Hobson has been on the Starbucks board since 2005 when she joined as an independent director. She has been independent vice chair since 2018.

She is also the co-chief executive of Ariel Investments, LLC, a global asset management firm. She holds board positions at a number of non-profit organizations.

Hobson succeeds Myron (Mike) E. Ullman, III, who will retire from the board in March after serving since 2003. He has been board chair since 2018.

Other members of the Starbucks board include the company’s chief executive, Kevin Johnson; its chief operating officer Roz Brewer; Microsoft Corp. MSFT, -1.03% Chief Executive Satya Nadella; and Lego board member Jørgen Vig Knudstorp.

Starbucks stock has gained 16% for the year to date, outpacing the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.14%, which is up 14.8% for the period.
