Security forces raid, seize drugs worth over Rs 167 cr

Imphal, December 08 2020: In a well planned and orchestrated operation based on hard intelligence, Assam Rifles along police and NCB raided two locations in the border town of Moreh yesterday morning and seized narcotics and contraband items worth over Rs 165 crore.

The security forces also recovered one foreign made pistol and a 'gun' along with ammunition and arrested two Myanmar citizens and four Indian drug traffickers, said a statement issued by PRO IGAR (South) .

In another operation today, troops of Assam Rifles intercepted brown sugar worth Rs 2.92 crore being smuggled from Myanmar on Larong-Khongjol route in Chandel, said AR.

Based on specific intelligence input regarding movement of narcotics consignment from Myanmar to Chandel, the Assam Rifles conducted the operation intercepting two individuals moving on a motorcycle carrying the brown sugar.

The seized narcotics have been handed over to Chandel police for further investigation, added AR.

Meanwhile, Imphal West district police arrested five drug peddlers including two women with huge quantities of brown sugar in two different operations in the last 24 hours.

Acting on specific information about the presence of drug smugglers in Mantripukhri area, a team of Imphal West commandos carried out frisking and checking of suspected vehicles near Durga Mandri, Mantripukhri.

At around 12.30 pm, the team stopped one i20 car for checking and found 30 soap cases containing brown sugar weighing around 370 grams, concealed inside the vehicle.

The team seized the drugs and arrested two occupants of the vehicle identified as Laishram Sanjit, 29, of Khurai Chingangbam Leikai (at present staying at Sajiwa Jail quarters) and Pinky Kumari Das, 26, of Moreh Ward Number 2 Premnagar, said police.

The arrested persons along with the seized drugs have been handed over to Heingang police station for further legal action under ND&PS Act.

In another operation at around 3.30 pm today, the same team of the Imphal West commando arrested three drug peddlers from Moidangpok Makha Leikai and seized 596 grams of brown sugar.

The three arrested have been identified as Oinam Jiten, 50, of Moidangpok Makha Leikai, Nengjanei, 42, and Hemjalet Haokip, 25, of New Keithelmanbi Kuki village.

All of them were arrested from the residence of Oinam Jiten where they (Nengjanei and Hemjalet) were allegedly delivering the brown sugar.

A total of 49 soap cases containing brown sugar weighing around 596 grams were seized, said police.

Further, the three along with the seized drug and a car used for transportation have been handed over to Patsoi police station for taking up necessary legal action under ND&PS Act, said the police.
