Dutch TV viewing time rises 13% in November, boosted by both VoD and live linear TV - SKO

Wednesday 9 December 2020 | 10:49 CET | News

Time spent in the Netherlands watching TV in the living room television advanced by 13 percent year-on-year in November, according to the latest figures from the SKO. Viewing was boosted by all ways of watching, including live linear television, and with VoD again achieving the highest growth.

In November, Dutch people spent an average of 231 minutes per day on living room television, up 13 percent, no doubt linked to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This put growth at similar levels to October (14%) and March (13%). In the intervening periods, the increase went lower, probably due to the relaxation of lockdown measures and the (very) warm weather.

The following breakdown can be made based on the SKO's figure of 231 minutes viewing time per day:

  • Linear television was good for 181 minutes (+ 9%), with other ways such as VOD amounting to 50 minutes (+ 32%).
  • Linear television can also be divided into live linear at 152 minutes (+6%), and delayed viewing at 29 minutes (+25%).

The market shares of the big three broadcasters NPO, RTL and Talpa showed a small shift from Talpa to RTL, with a fairly stable share for the NPO. On average over the last 12 months, the NPO stood at a stable 37.8 percent during the evenings, slightly more than a year ago (36.9%). RTL showed a small but steady growth, to 27.6 percent from 26.1 percent the year earlier. Talpa fell to 19.8 percent from 20.7 percent over the same period.
