Imphal, December 08 2020: The authority of Manipur University of Culture should resolve the issue regarding admission to MA courses at the said university at the earliest, said the students' unions of JN Manipur Dance Academy, Government Music College and Government Dance College in a statement.

The students' unions of the three institutes will not accept such criteria for admission to the University as lateral entry into the 3rd year programme or 'bridge course', the joint statement said.

The effort of members of academic council of the university to collect signatures to approve admission through lateral entry under 'cooked up resolution', after the academic council meeting called on November 29 was curtailed without any conclusion, is unacceptable and the students' unions consider it as insincere and half hearted approach, the statement said.

Even if there are attempts to foil the academic council meeting, it can be reconvened at a more safer place as the resolution or decision to be taken by the council is of paramount importance, it said while appealing all concerned to discuss the matter minutely during the academic council meeting.

The students' unions will not consider any pre-drafted paper as the resolution of the meeting, it said while making it clear that the unions want similar eligibility criteria for admission to the University of Culture ( from the 1 st year MA programme), followed in Manipur University.

Why students with relevant degrees or diploma certificates issued by JN Manipur Dance Academy, Government Music College and Government Dance College should undertake lateral entry or bridge course, asked the unions while terming the proposed ideas for admission as very regrettable and an ironic handling of the situation.

It further stated that those with a degree in general education and a diploma for 3 years in a particular field of art in addition is equivalent to a student with a degree in BA Dance.

Moreover, those candidates who had cleared 12 standard in general education and has completed foundation course in a field of art are qualified to seek admission to Graduate Courses in the University of Culture, the unions said while further reminding the university authority that there are also numerous other candidates who have Master's Degree in general education, lining up for admission to the university.

University is for all and not for a particular section of students, the statement said while citing that many foreign Nationals are being allowed admission to Music and Dance courses in Manipur University.

What the students' unions want is a little rectification to the existing eligibility criteria for admission to the University of Culture, it said while adding that the unions will be happy if the students are allowed admission in their desired fields based on merits.

It is very unfortunate not to see any competent authority well versed in culture being at the helm of the university, the unions said while adding that the university lacks regular VC, Registrar, Examination Controller and it is being administered by a Deputy Registrar.

While expressing its desire to include more persons from related fields in the academic council of the university, the students' unions also drew the attention of all concerned to help settle the issue at the earliest.
