A Provo man who refused to wear a face mask in a grocery store — and then refused to leave the store — was arrested Monday.

According to police, a 37-year-old man was at the US Bank counter inside the Smith’s Food and Drug at 350 N. Freedom Blvd. about 1:30 p.m. when the branch manager asked him to wear a mask. The manager told police the suspect “started to argue” and was “causing a scene” as he confronted other customers about why they were wearing masks. The manager said he asked the suspect five times to leave, but the man refused and “continued to argue with customers.”

Officers arrived and removed the suspect from the store.

He was booked into the Utah County jail for investigation of commercial interruption and criminal trespass, both misdemeanors, and later released on $300 bail. As of Tuesday afternoon, he had not been formally charged.
