Traffic to dozens of far-flung,remote areas suspended again due to fresh snowfall

Srinagar, Dec 8 (UNI) Dozens of far-flung and remote villages -- including border towns of Keran, Karnah, Tanghdar and Machil -- were again cut off on Tuesday in north Kashmir due slippery road conditions following fresh snowfall.

"Traffic was suspended to dozens of far-flung and remote villages, including Machil, Kernah, Keran and Tanghdar, due to slippery road conditions following fresh snowfall since late last night," an official of Police Control Room (PCR), Kupwara, told UNI over phone on Tuesday.

He said Sadhna top, Z gali and Phirkiyan pass received about a foot of fresh snowfall since last night. “The traffic to these areas would be restored only after weather improves and snow is cleared from the roads,” he added.

This is the fourth time that traffic was suspended to these far-flung and remote border areas due to snowfall during the past over a month. These border areas mostly remain cutoff from the rest of the valley during winter months due to accumulation of several feet of snow.

Meanwhile, the government earlier this month introduced helicopter services at subsidised fares once in week to border towns of Machil, Tangdhar and Keran.

Assistant Labour Commissioner Kupwara, nodal officer, last week issued a notice that said, “From Srinagar to Tangdhar, a passenger has to pay Rs 3000. The fares for other border areas have been fixed at Rs 2000 per passenger.”

The flight would leave every Tuesday at 930 hrs. The person intending to fly has to book his ticket seven days before the office of Assistant Labour Commissioner, Kupwara, the notice added.
