Amid massive demands of his ouster, Tripura CM Biplab Deb seeks opinion of the masses

Agartala, Dec 8 (UNI) A day after his own party men raised slogans demanding his removal in front of BJP national secretary and central observer for Tripura Vinod Kumar Sonkar, Chief Minister of Tripura Biplab Kumar Deb on Tuesday invited people of the state to assemble next Sunday at Stable Ground here to decide whether he should continue in the office.
Addressing the media here, an agitated Biplab said, "I heard some people raised 'Biplab Hatao, Tripura Bachao' slogan in front of Sonkar but want to know from the people of Tripura what they think. If they say the same, I shall step down."
"Thirty seven lakh people of Tripura had voted me to power in 2018 and I have been doing my best for the development of the state. Be it health, education or highways, I have wanted to implement PM Modi's vision. But since the demand for my removal has been raised, I wish to listen from the voters, " he continued.
Only three or four people shouted slogan in front of central leader, he said, asserting that "nobody can accept this as the voice of the people of Tripura".
"So, all are invited in Stable ground to express their wish whether or not Biplab Kumar Deb should remain as CM," he added.
"I shall be waiting to listen to the public voice there," Deb added.
During Sonkar's visit on Sunday, hundreds of angry party workers shouted "Biplab Hathao Tripura Bachao (Remove Biplab to Save Tripura) and stopped Sonkar and demonstrated for few minutes.
The Tripura CM has been facing dissidence of the majority of BJP MLAs and leaders for few months.
They accuse him of vendetta politics against his party men, leaders and MLAs.
As many as 26 of 36 BJP legislators have accused Deb and his government of massive corruption, poor administration and held him responsible for the loss of people's trust in the BJP's top brass.
The MLAs have threatened to dislodge Deb from the post unless the party removes him.
"Biplab has lost all sense because no Chief Minister can speak such rubbish and call people to save his chair. He was elected as an MLA by the voters, but the 36 BJP MLAs made him the Chief Minister. So, he should leave aside his stupidity, and come for a floor test. He must realise BJP became unpopular here due to him and it is better if he resigns immediately," said a dissident BJP MLA on the condition of anonymity.
