Google has opened its data centre in Middenmeer, in the Dutch municipality of Hollands Kroon. This is its second data centre in the country, after the site in Eemshaven opened in 2016.
To coincide with the opening, Google conducted research looking at its contribution to the Dutch economy. The study by Copenhagen Economics found a positive contribution of EUR 3.6 billion based on the data centre investments conducted from 2014 to 2019.
In total, Google has invested EUR 2.5 billion its data centre capacity in the Netherlands, including EUR 2 billion in 2020. In addition to the new site in Middenmeer, the data centre in Eemshaven is being expanded, with work expected to be finished in early 2021.
In terms of employment, the study found Google's investments over the period 2014-19 generated 3,400 jobs per year. The data centres employ 125 people in Middenmeer and around 350 in Eemshaven following the expansion. The additional employement is indirect, in the construction, telecom, security and support services sector.
