Coronavirus Cases in India: The recovery rate is 94.45 per cent.

New Delhi:

India recorded 32,981 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of active coronavirus cases in the country to 3,96,729, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday. With 39,109 new recoveries, the number of overall recovered COVID-19 patients stand at 91,39,901, pushing the recovery rate to 94.45 per cent.

The overall COVID-19 cases reached 96,77,203, including 3,96,729 active cases and 91,39,901 recoveries. With 391 new deaths, the casualties mounted to 1,40,573.

Bharat Biotech, the Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical firm that has been developing coronavirus vaccine Covaxin, on Monday said that it had applied to the central drug regulator seeking emergency use authorisation.

It is the third firm after Serum Institute of India and American pharma giant Pfizer to apply for emergency use approval.

Covid-19 LIVE Updates: 87-Year-Old Indian-Origin Man First To Get COVID-19 Vaccine In UK

An 87-year-old Indian-origin man from the north east of England will become one of the first people in the world to get a vaccine against COVID-19 when he receives his Pfizer/BioNTech jab at a hospital in Newcastle on Tuesday.

Hari Shukla from Tyne and Wear said he feels it is his duty to receive his first of the two-dose vaccine, a moment UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson hailed as a "huge step forward" as Tuesday was dubbed "V-Day" or Vaccine Day in the UK.

"I'm so pleased we are hopefully coming towards the end of this pandemic and I am delighted to be doing my bit by having the vaccine, I feel it is my duty to do so and do whatever I can to help," said Shukla.

"Having been in contact with the NHS (National Health Service), I know how hard they all work and the greatest respect for them - they have a heart of gold and I am grateful for everything they have done to keep us safe during the pandemic," he said.

Coronavirus LIVE Updates: Assam Reports 2 More COVID Deaths, 166 New Cases

Two more persons died to COVID-19 on Monday taking the number of deaths to 995, while 166 new infections pushed the tally to 2,13,925, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

He said that 131 coronavirus patients recovered from the disease and the number of total discharged people went up to 2,09,342.

Assam currently has 3,585 active cases, while three patients had migrated out of the state.

"Sad to share the demise of two #COVID patients today... Condolences & Prayers!" Mr Sarma said on Twitter.

Bharat Biotech, the Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical firm that has been developing coronavirus vaccine Covaxin, has applied to the central drug regulator seeking emergency use authorisation, sources said on Monday.

It is the third firm after Serum Institute of India and American pharma giant Pfizer to apply for emergency use approval.

Covaxin is being indigenously developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and is currently in Phase 3 trials. The trials are on at 18 sites across the country with over 22,000 volunteers. Read
