The All Kwakta Coordinating Committee (AKCC) is imposing a 48 hour bandh along the Tiddim Road from today, denouncing the Government for not paying heed to the demands of Kwakta people for clean water.

Volunteers of AKCC and bandh supporters came out early in the morning and restricted entry to Tiddim Road at Kwakta areas by barricading the road with branches, furniture, boulders.

The protesters also set tyres on fire.

Emergency services were exempted from the purview of the bandh.

To take control of the situation, a team of district police headed by Addl SP (LO) Luikham Lammiyo rushed to the spot and attempted to disperse the agitating protesters.

However, the protesters retaliated by hurling/catapulting stones to the police.

The police also fired tear gas shells and smoke bombs in response.

In the clash, at least 10 individuals, seven protesters and three police personnel - Additional SP (LO) Luikham Lanmiyo, one Sub-Inspector and a Constable sustained injuries.

The injured protesters were admitted to PHC Terakhong.

By the sideline of the protest demonstration, convenor of All Kwakta Co-ordinating Committee, Anish Ahamad said that the people of Kwakta were compelled to call the bandh as the Government paid no attention to their demand.

People of Kwakta are surviving without tap water facility for decades, he said and asked the Government to take responsibility for the casualty.

Asserting that they will extend their bandh indefinitely as violence was used against the protesters, the convenor added that the committee has also resolved to boycott all the leaders of the Constituency.

It is reported that firing of tear gas shells continued as the protesters refused to call off their protest and the bandh supporters responded by hurling stones at the police till late evening.
