Bharat Bandh hardly dents routine in MP

Bhopal, Dec 8 (UNI) The countrywide bandh, called by farmers’ organisations in protest against agrarian sector legislation, evoked an extremely lukewarm response on Tuesday in most of Madhya Pradesh and a mixed reaction in the northern districts of Morena, Bhind and Sheopur where groups of workers – owing allegiance to certain organisations – were observed moving about attempting to force closing of commercial outlets in the forenoon.
Life was normal in Bhopal, Indore and most other cities/towns. Congress workers and those associated with certain organisations tried to stage demonstrations but were kept within limits in view of law-enforcement arrangements. In Gwalior, approximately 20 people were briefly taken into custody while approaching the residence of Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, police said.

Rajya Sabha Member Digvijaya Singh was seen in Indore’s cantonment area urging traders to support the agitation. The Congress’ state unit’s erstwhile president Arun Yadav and his supporters reached the Roshanpura crossing here and staged a token protest. Indore, Ujjain, Sagar, Rewa and other districts were virtually unaffected. A police spokesman confirmed that no related violence was reported from any of the 52 districts.
