Verizon has partnered with entertainment guru Simon Fuller to explore the market for virtual reality 5G applications. The creator of the American Idol franchise and founder of XIX Entertainment will work with the mobile operator to come up with new entertainment experiences powered by the Verizon 5G network. XIX will collaborate with Verizon’s XR and 5G Labs to craft new storytelling experiences optimized for 5G-connected devices, including VR headsets and AR glasses.
The companies’ first project is expected to be a short-form VR experience designed by Fuller and his team using custom, 360 Stereoscopic 3D cameras. The content is designed to maximise the visual and audio fidelity of VR headsets, creating more immersive experiences.
Fuller is credited with bringing popular technology to the masses, from SMS voting on the American Idol TV show to driving iPad sales thanks to a tie-in with iTunes on Idol songs. Verizon has been exploring opportunities with 5G and mixed reality already with Snapchat, including a recent enhanced music performance.
